The convent on the island - 400 years of female community

  • Bosjökloster Slottsförvaltning Bosjökloster Slott & Trädgårdar Höör, Skåne County, 243 95 Sweden (se karta)

Step into the medieval vaults and back in time. The Benedictine monastery for women was founded on the Bo Island in the 1100’s. Four centuries of spiritual life and female companionship followed, but not without dramatic events.

Discover the philosophy, music and science of Hildegard of Bingen. This 12th-century "influencer" may well have inspired the first nuns who moved into the new monastery in Skåne.

Follow a dramatic royal intrigue in the 14th Century. At that time, influential families sent daughters to the convent, with power games penetrating the secluded monastery life. With the approval of the Danish Queen, the young Kirsten Pedersdatter was kidnapped from the convent to be forced into marriage, only to be rescued by a knight.

Feel the horror of the plague sweeping through Skåne, and see how nuns and ordinary people coped with and tried to understand all the death and suffering. Nuns, monks and priests cared for the sick and were among the hardest hit.

Learn why the convent closed in the 16th century, what became of the nuns, and how the religious upheaval of the time changed what choices women could make about their lives.
